I didn’t just visit Split.
I walked through it, stayed in it, and sat down with the people who actually run its hotels.
Over the course of a few days, I did site inspections with the general managers of six different properties. Different categories, different locations, different philosophies of what “luxury” means in this city.
And here’s the conclusion.
Not all five star hotels in Split are created equal.
In fact, the difference between a good stay and a great one here has very little to do with star rating, and everything to do with fit.
The Questions Most People Don’t Ask
When clients tell me they want a five star hotel in Split, I always pause.
Because before we even look at properties, there are questions that matter more than the number of stars.
Do you want to be in the middle of Old Town, stepping into energy the second you walk out, or do you want quiet evenings and space?
Does your transfer need to drop you off at the hotel door, or are you okay walking through pedestrian streets with luggage?
Do you mind a bathtub that’s beautiful but high and impractical, or do you need a walk in shower?
Do you enjoy the sound of a lively square at night, or will that ruin your sleep?
Is it even a vacation for you if you don’t see the sea from your room?
Do you need a pool, or is the beach enough?
And let’s be honest. Is a rooftop bar a requirement?
These are the things that shape your experience.
And Split is a city where those details matter more than people expect.
What I Found, Hotel by Hotel
Each of the six properties I visited does something very well.
But none of them are perfect for everyone.
Here’s the one thing that stood out in each.
Hotel Park is the one that made me feel taken care of. Not just checked in. The kind of service where fresh flowers, a glass of wine, and attention to detail are not extras, they’re just how things are done.
Hotel Ambassador is all about ease. Step outside and you’re already on the promenade, with the sea right in front of you. No navigating, no planning. Just walk and you’re in it.
Hotel Cornaro surprised me with its rooftop. One of the best in the city. Pool, jacuzzi, bar, and views that make you forget you’re in a larger, more structured hotel.
Hotel Santa Lucia gives you something very few places can. A room overlooking the main square. You don’t visit Split. You live in it, right from your window.
Hotel Olīvier feels like the one people haven’t fully discovered yet. Smaller, modern, right by the beach, and quietly positioning itself to become much more popular.
Le Méridien Lav is the opposite of Old Town living. A full resort experience with its own beach setup, marina, and space to actually relax without leaving the property.
And what ties all of them together is this.
They’re all good.
But they’re good for different reasons.
Why This Matters for Your Trip
Split is not a one size fits all destination.
You can have a completely different experience depending on where you stay.
You can wake up in a historic square with music echoing through the night.
Or in a quiet residential pocket with the beach across the street.
Or in a full resort where everything is taken care of without stepping into the city at all.
None of these are better.
They’re just different.
And choosing the right one is what makes the trip feel effortless.
