There is a point in some European itineraries when the next beautiful city starts to look suspiciously like another suitcase to pack.
I love helping clients see Europe. I also think we owe them a trip they will enjoy while they are actually on it. A wonderful museum doesn’t become less wonderful because we put a quiet few days after it. If anything, people may remember more of the trip when they aren’t moving every other morning.
After staying at Hôtel Royal, I started thinking about Évian-les-Bains as a place to put those days. A French town on Lake Geneva, with the Alps nearby and Switzerland across the water, gives a family plenty of possibilities. It also gives them permission to choose very few of them.

Why add Évian to a European trip?
Évian works especially well when you want a lakeside stay between busier parts of a France-and-Switzerland itinerary. You can spend time at your hotel, explore the town or make an outing into the surrounding region without changing your base every night.
That last part matters. A free afternoon in Paris can still come with the sense that you ought to be somewhere. At a lake resort, a swim followed by lunch feels like a complete plan. I like giving clients a setting where they can enjoy that without feeling they are wasting their time in Europe.
Évian has moved much higher on my list for the point in a trip when everyone could use a few days in one place. After my stay, I could see exactly why that time would be well spent here.

Are three nights enough, or would you choose four?
Three nights usually give you two full days between arrival and departure; four nights give you three. For a family who wants both hotel time and an outing, that extra day can make a noticeable difference.
With three nights, there is room for an easy arrival afternoon, a full day around Évian and the hotel, and a day out. The Cachat Spring is free to visit year-round, and a walk along the lake doesn’t require a great deal of advance negotiation.
Four nights give us room for Lausanne and a separate mountain outing, while still leaving a full day at the resort. Although a child who has made a friend at the club, or a parent who has finally opened a book, may have other ideas about that outing.

How would Évian fit after Paris?
Paris followed by Évian is a combination I’ll be recommending: city days first, then a few nights by the lake. From here, Switzerland is a natural next conversation, and Geneva is an option for the flight home.
Paris–Évian rail journeys combine TGV and regional services, with some direct TGV departures on seasonal weekends. The exact connection depends on the travel day.
I like leaving the arrival evening fairly open. Europe is quite capable of supplying its own plot twists without our help, and it’s nicer to arrive with dinner to look forward to than a reservation you’re already late for.
This combination is particularly appealing to me when the Paris portion has been full. A few nights with fewer fixed appointments can let everyone enjoy the second half of the trip rather than simply recover from the first.
What about Geneva, Lausanne or a longer Switzerland itinerary?
Évian is a natural option to explore alongside the Lake Geneva region. Geneva is accessible by road and rail, and Lausanne is linked to Évian by CGN’s N1 passenger ferry, with the crossing taking about 35 minutes.
Coming from Switzerland, the approach through Lausanne has the appeal of arriving across the lake. Geneva provides road and rail alternatives. With a family, I’m interested in the whole journey; the prettiest route on a map can become less charming during the third change with a stroller.
And Lausanne makes a lovely day out from Évian: breakfast in France, a boat across the lake and lunch in Switzerland, followed by a return to the same hotel. Dinner works on evenings with a suitable return sailing.
For clients already spending time elsewhere on Lake Geneva, Hôtel Royal itself may be the reason to add Évian. A few days enjoying the resort can feel quite different from moving through the region.
Can Évian work with Italy or the French Alps?
Northern Italy, Switzerland and Évian can fit into a longer trip together. Rome or the Amalfi Coast is a different story; Évian is not a quick detour from either. This is a combination for a route that already brings you toward the Alps.
A few mountain days followed by time at the lake is another combination I like. Or you can stay in Évian and head out toward Thollon-les-Mémises and Bernex for mountain walks and seasonal activities.
In winter, Évian gives a mixed group access to skiing alongside a hotel-and-spa holiday. There is a drive to the ski areas, so it suits a different kind of trip from staying at the lifts. I’ve explored that in the winter article.
How do you get to Évian from Geneva Airport?
My transfer between Geneva Airport and Hôtel Royal took an hour and twenty minutes. That was useful to experience for myself, because it gives me a real sense of the journey when I’m putting this part of a trip together for clients.
The Léman Express also connects Geneva Cornavin with Évian-les-Bains, with a separate connection from the airport.

Where would I stay, and what would I reserve ahead?
Hôtel Royal is the hotel I stayed at and the one that prompted this whole line of thinking. I’ve put the room choices, family policies and my inspection observations into the Hôtel Royal family review. Hôtel Ermitage is another resort option to compare when we look at the family’s priorities.
Once the room and the few things you’re particularly excited about are arranged, there is no reason to fill every afternoon. A swim and a late lunch are allowed to be the plan.
In summer, the lake can take up a very pleasant part of the stay. Winter brings the mountains into it. And if a concert is the reason to come, we can build the visit around that evening. This is what I came home appreciating: there are several quite different holidays available in the same place.

Who would I recommend this to?
Families who want a few days in one place are the first clients I have in mind. I also love the idea for couples who enjoy a good hotel, and for extended families whose ideas of a good day vary from person to person.
On a very short first visit to Europe, these days may belong somewhere you’ve been dreaming about for years. But when there is room in the itinerary, Évian gives us a very good reason to slow down.
For the right trip, though, I can see Évian making the whole holiday feel better. You get to put the suitcases away for a few days and make plans that begin with what you feel like doing. After enough early departures, that can be a very attractive part of Europe.
