Hotel Santa Lucia sits right on People’s Square in the heart of Split’s Old Town, and that alone defines the experience. You’re not walking into the city, you’re already part of it. Step outside, and you’re surrounded by cafés, music, energy, history. It’s immersive in the truest sense.
And then you walk inside, and everything softens.
The hotel dates back to 1776, making it one of the oldest in Split. It’s spread across three interconnected buildings, with just 34 rooms in total. Every room is different, which is always something I appreciate but also something I guide my clients through carefully. What you book matters here.
The design leans light and calm, almost intentionally pulling you away from the intensity outside. Soft color palettes, Italian crystal chandeliers, a quiet elegance that feels more refined than dramatic.
But here’s where it gets interesting.
Location and Setting
If you book a deluxe room or above, you’re looking directly onto the main square. And it’s beautiful. The kind of view that makes you pause, open the windows, and just take it in.
It also comes with reality.
You will hear the city.
There is a summer noise ordinance, so things quiet down around midnight, except Saturdays when it can go until 2 am. For many travelers, that’s part of the charm. For others, especially light sleepers or families with young kids, it’s something I always discuss in advance.
If you want the location but not the noise, there’s a smart alternative. Rooms facing the inner garden. No view to speak of, but quiet. And in a place like this, that trade off can be worth it.
Room categories range quite a bit. Standard rooms start around 295 euros, luxury rooms around 550, deluxe suites around 820, and the one luxury suite goes up to about 1500. That suite is also the only one with both a bathtub and a shower, which is an important detail for certain travelers.

Bathrooms in general are something to pay attention to here. Some bathtubs are quite high, which is common in older European buildings, but not ideal for everyone. For older guests or anyone with mobility concerns, I always request a walk in shower specifically.
There are also a few room setups that work very well for families. The gallery deluxe and family gallery rooms offer more space, with two bathrooms, a king bed and twin beds. Not something you find easily in Old Town properties.
And if you’re traveling with a group, there’s an interesting option where deluxe rooms overlooking the square can be connected across two floors. It creates a shared experience while still keeping privacy.
But this is also where I set expectations.
The hotel is historic, spread across multiple buildings, with split levels and quite a few stairs. It’s part of the charm, but it’s not ideal for anyone who needs full accessibility or prefers straightforward layouts.
There’s a rooftop terrace as well, which sounds perfect in theory, and it is for the views. But in the height of summer, it gets very hot, so it’s more of a quick visit spot than a place you’ll linger midday.

So who is this hotel really for?
If you want modern, spacious, smooth hotels with elevators and easy layouts, this is not your place.
But if you want to feel Split, truly feel it, wake up in the main square, step into history, and experience a property that is part of the city rather than separate from it, this is a beautiful choice.
For couples, it’s romantic in a very real, lived in way.
For travelers who appreciate authenticity over perfection, it delivers.
And for anyone booking it, the key is simple. Choose the right room, and you’ll love it.
