Greece has rapidly emerged as a top-tier destination for pickleball tourism, with the Mouratoglou Tennis Center at Costa Navarino offering unparalleled facilities for players of all levels. Our September experience demonstrated why the "shoulder season" is the golden window for active travel: the scorching summer heat subsides to perfect mid-70s playing temperatures, allowing for competitive morning matches on professional hard courts followed by recovery afternoons at the nearby Voidokilia Beach.
Exploring the Rich Culture of Athens
Our adventure began in Athens, the cradle of civilization. The group’s excitement was palpable as we walked the ancient streets, taking in the awe-inspiring Acropolis, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and the vibrant shop-filled streets of Plaka. A welcome dinner accompanied by traditional Greek folk dancing set the tone for our journey—a celebration of culture and camaraderie. In the afternoon, we swapped history for pickleball, playing on courts that echoed with the spirit of friendly competition.

Santorini – A Visual Dream Come True
A Feast for the Senses Amidst Stunning Scenery and Lifelong Friendships.
After Athens, Santorini welcomed us with its breathtaking landscapes. Flying in over the caldera, the iconic whitewashed houses and blue domes of Oia felt like stepping into a postcard. We toured the archaeological wonders of Akrotiri, strolled through Oia’s charming streets, and soaked up the island’s beauty, and explored nightlife in Fira. The magic of Santorini lay not just in its landscapes, but in the shared moments of awe we experienced as a group.
Our days in Santorini began energizing mornings of pickleball at Playtime Santorini, set against the stunning backdrop of the Aegean Sea. Even though pickleball is still growing in popularity in Greece, playing on this beautiful court was a truly unique experience. We are deeply grateful to Akis Yagoraris, the owner of Playtime Santorini, for his hospitality and foresight in bringing the sport to the island. His court, the only one in Santorini, provided the perfect setting for our games, and the breathtaking views made it even more special.
In the afternoon, we shifted gears to a more relaxed activity with a wine-tasting tour. We visited local vineyards, where we tasted Santorini’s iconic wines like Assyrtiko and Vinsanto, paired with delicious local bites. The relaxed atmosphere and rich flavors brought our group even closer as we shared stories and enjoyed the beauty of Santorini’s wine heritage.

Sunset Sailing Adventure in Santorini
Sailing into the Sunset: Cherished Memories, Scenic Views, and Laughter with Friends.
The highlight of our trip, hands down, was the sunset sailing cruise around Santorini’s volcanic coast. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the caldera, we sailed past Red Beach and White Beach, sharing stories and laughter over a BBQ dinner onboard. The serene beauty of the setting sun and the ocean breeze made this moment one of pure bliss—a memory etched in all our hearts.

Venturing to Crete – A Journey Through History
A Land of Living History, Delicious Traditions, and Unforgettable Moments.
From Santorini, we sailed to Crete, where history greeted us at every turn. Our visit to an olive oil farm provided a fascinating insight into one of Crete’s oldest traditions, followed by a delicious meal prepared from the freshest local ingredients. Exploring the Palace of Knossos, we delved into the heart of the Minoan civilization, awed by its architectural splendor.

Connecting through Pickleball and Relaxation in Crete
Where Friendly Competition Meets Pure Relaxation: Pickleball and Leisure in Crete.
Crete wasn’t just about history, it was also about pickleball and relaxation. The courts buzzed with friendly competition, while others chose to unwind on the beaches or indulge in optional water sports. The balance between activity and leisure allowed everyone to enjoy their time on their terms, strengthening the connections formed earlier in the trip.

Building Unbreakable Bonds Through Unforgettable Moments in Beautiful Destinations.
There’s something truly powerful about shared experiences—especially when they happen in places as beautiful as Greece. Whether we were playing pickleball, sailing into a sunset, or sharing a meal together, each moment brought us closer as a group. Friendships were built that I know will last far beyond this trip.
Personal Reflections on Leading the Trip
Guiding Connections and Growth: The Joy of Bringing People Together Through Adventure.
For me, leading this group was a deeply fulfilling experience. Watching participants not only grow in their pickleball skills but also form lasting bonds through shared experiences was a joy. It reminded me once again why I love organizing these trips, because they allow people to connect on a deeper level, both with the destination and with each other.

Frequently Asked Questions: Planning a Pickleball Trip to Greece
1. Where is the best place to play pickleball in Greece?
The premier destination is Costa Navarino in the Peloponnese. It hosts the Mouratoglou Tennis Center, which features state-of-the-art pickleball courts, professional coaching, and clinics, set against a backdrop of rolling olive groves.
2. Why is September the best time for a pickleball vacation?
September offers the perfect climatic balance. The extreme August heat (often 35°C+) has dropped to a comfortable 25-28°C (77-82°F), ideal for outdoor sports, yet the sea remains warm enough for swimming after a match.
3. Do I need to bring my own paddle and balls?
While the resort offers high-quality rentals (often brands like Selkirk or similar), we recommend bringing your own paddle to maintain your consistency. The resort provides plenty of balls and court equipment.
4. Are there clinics or lessons available?
Yes. The center offers private coaching, group clinics, and "drill and play" sessions. It is suitable for total beginners wanting to learn the game or advanced players looking to refine their dinking strategy.
5. Is this trip suitable for non-players?
Absolutely. While you are on the court, non-playing partners can enjoy four world-class golf courses, the Anazoe Spa, cooking classes, or simply relax at the beach club. It is a true multi-activity destination.
6. What type of court surface is used?
The courts at Costa Navarino are professional-grade hard courts (acrylic), similar to what you would find at major US tournaments. They offer excellent bounce consistency and are floodlit for evening play.
7. How do I get to Costa Navarino?
The most convenient route is flying directly into Kalamata International Airport (KLX), followed by a 45-minute transfer. Alternatively, you can fly to Athens and take a 3.5-hour scenic drive.
8. Can I organize a group tournament?
Yes, the facility is designed for groups. You can work with Evyssa Vacations to reserve blocks of court time, arrange round-robin tournaments, and set up post-match social events for your pickleball club.
9. Is there a dress code for the courts?
Proper court attire (athletic wear) and non-marking court shoes are required. The vibe is relaxed but respectful of the sport. Swimwear is not permitted on the courts.
10. How far are the courts from the hotel rooms?
If you stay at The Westin Resort, the courts are a short walk or a quick buggy ride away. The Mandarin Oriental is also nearby, but requires a slightly longer buggy transfer to reach the Racquet Academy.
