The short answer: France and Italy pair beautifully, and they were the most common international pairing in Virtuoso’s 2026 multi-city travel data. The secret is to pick one clear line across the map, not to visit everything. Three routes work especially well: Paris to Italy by train, Provence to the Italian Riviera by car, and the Riviera coast by yacht.
Why this pairing is so popular
Virtuoso's 2026 network data shows luxury travellers increasingly string several cities together on one trip, with France and Italy the most common international pairing among those multi-city itineraries. Both rank in the top four destinations of the 2026 Virtuoso Luxe Report.
The two countries share a border, a coastline and excellent rail links, so the trip can flow without feeling like two separate holidays.
Route 1: Paris to Italy by train
The shape: Paris, then an overnight or fast train into Italy, then Florence, Venice or the coast.
This is the most elegant way to cross the Alps. Belmond's Villeggiatura by Train journeys combine the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express from Paris with a stay at a Belmond hotel in Venice, Florence, Portofino or the Amalfi Coast, on selected departures. Regular high-speed trains also link Paris and Milan.
Pacing: three nights in Paris, then two Italian bases of three to four nights each.
Best for: first-time visitors to both countries, rail lovers, anniversaries.

Route 2: Provence to the Italian Riviera by car
The shape: Provence, then the French Riviera, then over the border to Liguria (Portofino, Cinque Terre) or on to Tuscany.
This route suits travellers who like to stop for lunch in a village they had never heard of that morning. With a private driver, the drives become part of the holiday rather than a chore.
Pacing: four nights in Provence, three on the Riviera, three to four in Liguria or Tuscany.
Best for: food and wine lovers, golfers, families who prefer one long journey to flights.

Route 3: The Riviera coast by yacht
The shape: a private yacht from the Côte d'Azur along the coast towards Liguria, with nights in harbour towns and days in coves.
The coastline connects the two countries. You can lunch in Saint-Tropez and wake up in Italy. This route needs a crewed yacht and good weather, so it is best planned from late spring to early autumn.
Pacing: five to seven nights on board, with a hotel stay at each end.
Best for: families and friends who want privacy, couples celebrating.

What most travellers get wrong
Trying to include Paris, Provence, Rome, Florence and the Amalfi Coast in ten days. It looks wonderful on paper and feels like an airport tour in practice.
We typically guide clients to choose two or three bases for a ten to twelve-night trip. If you have longer, add a fourth.
Choosing your route
Two countries, done well, are better than four done in a hurry. If you are weighing routes, start with how you want to travel between them.
How many days do we need for France and Italy?
Ten to fourteen nights is comfortable for two or three bases.
Should we fly or take the train between France and Italy?
For Paris to northern Italy, the train is often as quick door to door and far more pleasant. For southern Italy, a short flight may make more sense, unless the journey itself is the point.
Which order is better, France first or Italy first?
It usually depends on your flights. Many travellers from the US fly into Paris and home from Rome or Milan.
