My previous golf preparation consisted largely of mini golf, which did not make me especially formidable at the driving range. It did, however, give me a little confidence once we reached the putting green.
I took a lesson at Terre Blanche as a complete beginner. A golf professional started us with the basics and technique at the practice range, where the technology and training setup made it very obvious that serious golfers have plenty to work with here. I mostly concentrated on making contact with the ball.
Then we moved to putting. Finally, years of family entertainment had given me a transferable skill.
How serious is the golf at Terre Blanche?
Very. Terre Blanche has two 18 hole courses designed by Dave Thomas and the Albatros Golf Performance Center, with a driving range, putting and chipping areas and technology for training and analysis. There are shops, instruction and enough infrastructure that a golfer could make the sport the center of the trip.
That is why I think calling Terre Blanche a golf resort is fair. Golf is not tucked discreetly behind the spa. It is part of the place.
Would a beginner feel out of place?
I did not. My lesson was fun precisely because nobody expected me to know what I was doing. Starting at the practice facilities also made much more sense than being deposited on a course and hoping for the best.
For a couple where one person plays seriously and the other is curious, Terre Blanche gives us several ways to handle it. The golfer can play a proper round. The beginner can take a lesson. Or the non golfer can ignore the entire subject and go to the spa.
What does everyone else do while someone is golfing?
This is where Terre Blanche becomes easier to recommend beyond golf trips. The spa is substantial, the infinity pool is lovely, families have the Kids Club, and the surrounding region gives you plenty of reasons to leave for a few hours.
I would happily spend part of the morning at the spa and meet a golfer for lunch afterward. With children, club time can create the same separation. Nobody has to pretend that watching someone else play 18 holes is their idea of Provence.
Could golf be a bonus rather than the reason for the trip?
That is actually how I experienced it. The golf identity was obvious, but it was one part of a much broader stay. Based on the families and couples I saw around the resort, that balance made sense.
I would send a serious golfer here confidently. I would also send a family where one person happens to love golf. And after my lesson, I would encourage a beginner to try it. Just give me a little time on the putting green before we start keeping score.
