Denali National Park is unique among national parks, distinguished by certain fundamental aspects for those interested in understanding or planning a visit. The park boasts a single road, the Denali Park Road, which stretches 92 miles from east to west, primarily composed of dirt and gravel, traversing diverse landscapes. Located at the park's eastern edge, the entrance is identified by its mile along Alaska Highway 3, at Mile 237. During the summer season, privately-owned vehicles can access the initial 15 miles of the park road, while guided buses provide the main mode of transportation for journeys deeper into the park. Denali National Park's origins date back to its establishment by Congress in 1917, initially aimed at protecting Dall sheep from over-hunting. Over time, the park's size and mission expanded to encompass approximately 6 million acres, with much of it preserved in a pristine, undeveloped state. Unlike many other parks, Denali offers the unique opportunity for off-trail exploration in a truly wild setting.
