Yes, Temple Bar is touristy. Yes, I would still walk through it on a first visit to Dublin. You don’t have to pretend it’s an undiscovered local secret to enjoy the live music, crowds and chaos for what they are.
Sometimes you knowingly walk into the tourist trap
Temple Bar already has the reputation. You know before you arrive that you’re entering one of Dublin’s most heavily visited areas.
And yet, when you’re there, it’s hard not to fall into the trap. The music spills out of the pubs. People fill the streets. There is an energy and a little chaos to it that looks and feels exactly like the Dublin scene many visitors have imagined.
I enjoyed it. I just wouldn’t mistake seeing Temple Bar for experiencing all of Dublin.
What else I would make time for
Trinity College and the Book of Kells are absolutely worth a visit in my opinion. I also enjoyed simply walking the city and the riverfront, especially because we lucked out with beautiful weather.
Dublin is a city where I want some unscheduled walking time. Not every hour needs a ticket attached to it.
What about staying outside the center?
On this trip I also stayed in Dún Laoghaire, and the contrast was interesting. It feels more like a chic seaside town than a busy metropolis. The promenade is long and wide, there is fresh air, and I watched adults and children swimming in the sea at the beginning of October.
I tested the water with one finger and quickly determined that the locals must be insane.
The DART makes central Dublin accessible in roughly half an hour, so the area can work for travelers who prefer a quieter seaside base. I was less impressed by my hotel room and breakfast experience at the Royal Marine, so I would separate the appeal of the location from an automatic hotel recommendation.
The real answer
Go to Temple Bar if you want to see it. Enjoy the music. Watch the crowds. Have the experience. Then keep going.
A good Dublin stay should contain more than the places everyone has already photographed. But being a thoughtful traveler does not require pretending famous places can’t be fun.
