Yes. Killarney was one of my favorite stops, and I would give it at least two nights. It has enough to fill the days, enough atmosphere to fill the evenings, and it gave me something I had been missing on a fast-moving itinerary: time to enjoy where I was.
Yes, it's touristy. I loved it anyway.
Killarney is not pretending tourists haven’t discovered it. There are hotels, pubs, restaurants, jaunting cars and plenty of visitors. And you know what? I loved it.
Travel has developed a strange obsession with avoiding anything popular, as though enjoying a well-known place is somehow less sophisticated. I don’t buy that. Sometimes places are popular because they are fun.
Days in Killarney
Killarney National Park gives the destination substance beyond town. We took a horse-drawn jaunting car toward Ross Castle and visited Muckross House and Gardens. The jaunting car could sound gimmicky on paper. In the setting, I enjoyed it.
Then night arrives
Almost every pub seemed to have live music. We bar-hopped, choosing the next stop according to whichever tunes spoke to us more. No complicated plan. Just walk, listen and go in.
That is exactly the kind of evening I don’t want to remove from an Ireland itinerary by scheduling another early checkout. One night would have made Killarney another stop. Two made it somewhere we actually stayed.
